Communicating is one of the most natural aspects of our life. Communication is the tool that allows us to interact with others, express our feelings, emotions, needs, request recognition and give, work, build professional and personal relationships. It is perhaps the most important skill we have and perhaps the one for which we receive the least amount of training.
- How much of the potential inherent in communication do we really use?
- How could we change it?
- How could it improve our existence?
A lifetime would not be enough to read books, or take classes…. However, there are some elements that, if taken into consideration, can transform the way we communicate and make it effective and functional. Many of the answers we are looking for are within Transactional Analysis.
Transactional Analysis
Transactional Analysis is one of the best known psychological theories that is based on a set of techniques aimed at supporting people to know, understand and possibly change their behavior. According to the most simplified definition is the theory of personality (who I am) the theory of communication (how I relate) and of change (who I want to be in the future). (https://itaaworld.org, 2008). Here is all the strength and power we have to be aware, responsible for our development and the acquisition of autonomy. Transactional Analysis is therefore a method of analysis that deals with both personal and interpersonal everyday situations, from simple conversation with others to more complex relationships.
Applications in personal and organizational contexts
Transactional Analysis provides us with a guideline and tools (existential positions, transactions, contracts, games, scripts, caresses, drivers, devaluations, etc.) for effective intervention both in training and in those of Coaching. Individuals, both in groups and organizations have a way of understanding where to act to transform a situation or behavior from dysfunctional to functional. The setting is that of the present and the future (not the past which is the territory of the psychotherapist). Organizations, as well as people, are a set of written and unwritten values, norms and rules. Understanding the needs of each one means finding the most suitable answers to create a climate of recognition, support, permissions, which allow the evolution of the human being and his professional and personal growth.
